Levittown 11756

A Recognizable Name

Levittown, formerly known as Island Trees, is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead on Long Island, sitting halfway between the villages of Hempstead and Farmingdale.

Levittown gets its recognizable name from its builder, the firm of Levitt & Sons, Inc. which built the district as a one of it’s famous planned communities between 1947 and 1951. Levittown was the first truly mass-produced suburb and is generally known as the model for postwar suburbs throughout the country. William Levitt, who assumed control of Levitt and Sons in 1954, is considered the father of modern suburbia in the United States. Levittown has become so ingrained in American culture that the Smithsonian Institution in Washington would like to put on display an entire Levittown house.
